Here are some of the things to see this month:
- 9 pm, southern sky – Mars in Capricornus and Saturn in Sagittarius visible above the horizon
- 10 pm, southern sky – Pegasus constellation, with the prominent Great Square asterism, formed by the bright Algenib, Scheat and Markab with Alpheratz in Andromeda, and the star 51 Pegasi, the first sunlike star with a confirmed planet in its orbit
- 10 pm, eastern sky – Andromeda constellation, with the bright star Alpheratz and the famous Andromeda Galaxy (Messier 31), the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way and the most distant deep sky object visible to the unaided eye, and its companion galaxies Messier 110 and Messier 32
- 1 am, eastern sky – Orionid meteor shower peaking on the night of October 21 to 22, but may be washed out by the light of the nearly full Moon this year
